Première question qu’on vous a déjà certainement posée des dizaines de fois... Mais pourquoi avez-vous mis autant de temps à donner un successeur à World Downfall ?
Pete Sandoval : C’est dû à nos obligations envers nos groupes, MORBID ANGEL et NAPALM DEATH au long des années. Il a été impossible de trouver du temps pour s’isoler et travailler sur un second album de TERRORIZER. Mais quand Jesse a quitté NAPALM DEATH, il a été capable de bosser sur de nouveaux titres.

J’ai déjà lu certaines choses là-dessus évidemment, mais peux-tu expliquer à nos lecteurs pourquoi ce n’est pas Oscar Garcia qui chante sur cet album ?
Pete Sandoval : On a contacté Oscar pour lui demander de nous rejoindre. Mais il a préféré jouer sa carte personnelle avec son groupe. Le nouveau chanteur, Anthony Rezhawk, est un vieil ami dont le style vocal et la manière d’écrire ses textes correspondaient bien à TERRORIZER. Sa performance a été celle espérée sonnant brutale et brutalement honnête.

David Vincent (MORBID ANGEL, bassiste sur World Downfall) n’a pas pris part au nouveau projet. Pourquoi ?
Pete Sandoval : Je pense que la raison est qu’il est trop occupé. Quand il n’est pas avec moi et MORBID ANGEL, il tourne de manière intensive avec les GENITORTURERS. J’ai alors réalisé qu’il nous fallait plutôt quelqu’un de disponible pour tourner quand nous en aurions envie, nous ne voulions pas de conflits de dates entre les groupes.
(NdWill : je vais quand même vous raconter une anecdote qui peut aussi en dire long ; alors que nous étions, Christophe de SCARVENGER et moi, en backstages à Anvers le 15 avril 2005, j’étais justement en train de parler de cette réunification de Terrorizer à Pete Sandoval quand je lui ai demandé si David Vincent allait en faire partie… Or, celui-ci, qui était derrière la porte a entendu notre conversation et a surgi brutalement dans la salle en gueulant sur Pete Sandoval ! Il était pas mal question de pognon par rapport à World Downfall, comme quoi David Vincent avait payé une partie du studio sur ses fonds propres et qu’il n’avait jamais revu son argent… Bref, que si Pete voulait qu’il joue sur ce nouvel album, qu’il devrait d’abord le rembourser ! Ça avait été très chaud et j’avais du coup regretté d’avoir parlé de ça à Pete ! lol…)

Finalement, c’est donc Tony Norman qui tient la seconde guitare et la basse (!) sur l’album. C’est pour le moins surprenant je dirais puisqu’il n’y a aucun solo sur cet album. Quelles furent tes motivations pour enrôler Tony dans cette aventure ?
Pete Sandoval : Comme je disais, nous avions besoin de quelqu’un de dispo pour tourner. Et comme Tony a fait du bon boulot avec MORBID ANGEL, j’ai pensé qu’il serait la bonne personne pour le job.

Parlons de la musique maintenant. Pour certains, cet album est une tuerie, pour d’autres, il n’arrive pas à la cheville de World Downfall... Mais j’ai surtout l’impression que beaucoup de ceux qui critiquent ne savent même pas que certains titres sont encore plus anciens que ceux du premier album ! Premièrement, que peux-tu répondre à ces critiques et deuxièmement, peux-tu nous parler de ces titres en particulier, que vous avez réutilisés ?
Pete Sandoval : Nous comprenons qu’il est normal de vouloir comparer les deux albums mais nous espérons que nos nouveaux et anciens fans apprécieront Darker Days Ahead sans biaiser. Quiconque aurait espéré de près ou de loin que ce nouvel album soit une copie carbone de World Downfall est irréaliste et tous ceux qui pourraient penser qu’il est pire ou mieux se priveraient d’eux-mêmes de la joie de l’appréhender dans sa propre entité. Cet album est un instantané unique, un enregistrement moderne de pas mal d’anciens titres avec aussi des nouveaux pour chapeauter le tout. Nous pensons qu’il représente parfaitement l’essence du groupe et qu’il maintient l’intégrité de notre nom. Nous espérons que les gens comprendront que notre seul but a été de créer une musique destructive ; c’est aussi le fait de vouloir détruire les fausses espérances à propos de la nature, de l’histoire et du futur de la civilisation. Pour ceux qui pensent que tout va bien dans le monde, cette suite de World Downfall devrait fournir une dose mortelle de désillusion terroriste.

Quand avez-vous trouvé le temps d’écrire de nouveaux titres, et comment se sont passés les processus de composition et d’enregistrement ?
Pete Sandoval : Comme je le disais plus haut, le départ de Jesse de NAPALM DEATH a dégagé du temps pour faire de nouveaux titres. Le processus a démarré quand Jesse et moi avons jammé en Floride pour faire de nouvelles démos. Il fut alors décidé que ce serait Anthony Rezhawk qui se chargerait des vocaux. Arrivés à ce niveau, dans son studio de Los Angeles, le “Seventh Generation Collective”, on a produit une démo. Quand Century Media l’a eue entre les mains et nous a signés, on a pu entrer en studio en Floride, pour véritablement faire l’album, aux D.O.W. studios.

Une question hante tous les anciens fans : pourquoi avez-vous réenregistré "Dead Shall Rise" ? Vous manquiez d’un titre pour finir l’album ou quoi ? lol… Plus sérieusement, pensez-vous qu’il y a beaucoup de différences entre les deux versions ?
Pete Sandoval : Nous voulions juste recréer le sentiment qui nous animait en 1986 / 1987 mais en utilisant la technologie moderne. Nous aimons vraiment cette chanson et nous voulions la rejouer dans cette ère moderne.

Le dernier titre, "Ghost Train", est très bizarre. Vous aviez fumé un petit chichon de Mary Jane avant de le composer ou quoi (lol) ? Ce titre est un voyage dans l’espace !
Anthony Rezhawk : He he… Pete est un pianiste / claviériste très talentueux et il a voulu faire partager un peu de sa folie aux fans de TERRORIZER. Tu pourras vraiment ressentir une sorte d’urgence dans ce titre…

Nous savons que les lyrics sont souvent importants pour un groupe de grindcore… De quoi on parle dans cet album ?
Anthony Rezhawk : Darker Days Ahead démontre une intensité moderne et une profondeur au niveau des paroles. Sans parler des idéaux fantasmagoriques de l’Enfer, il incite à la crainte paralysante et au supplice inquiétant par la description des horreurs de la réalité. Les forces de destruction environnementale globales (mondiales), technologiquement avancées, l'asservissement humain et animal et la concentration du pouvoir dans les mains sanglantes de ces « conquistadores » d'entreprise, tout ça menace « d'obscurcir les jours futurs » (NdWill :  « to darken days ahead » en anglais…).

Est-ce que Jesse pourrait nous parler de son départ de Napalm Death et est-ce une grande déception pour lui de ne plus faire partie du groupe ? A-t-il écouté les nouveaux albums faits sans lui et y a-t-il une chance qu’il rejoigne à nouveau le groupe ?
Anthony Rezhawk : Jesse est mort. Nous ne pouvons donc répondre à sa place…

Comment jugez-vous la scène grindcore actuelle qui a pas mal évolué depuis votre premier album et les premiers Napalm Death ? Pour moi, cette scène est polluée par des suiveurs qui chantent en plus des trucs complètement débiles et en France, nous en avons un paquet de ce genre de groupes ! Qu’en pensez-vous ?
Pete Sandoval : Ca a été cool de voir la scène se développer après nous un peu partout dans le monde. Mais quand on fait le tour de la question, il y a un manque de sujets sérieux. Le grindcore a été créé pour faire la liaison entre le punk et le métal pour apporter des idéaux radicaux au travers d’une musique brutale. Malheureusement, beaucoup de groupes grindcore ont perdu ça de vue.

Est-ce que TERRORIZER a un avenir maintenant ?
Pete Sandoval : Les plans sont en attente à la suite de la mort de Jesse il y a quelques semaines. On verra…

Que pourriez-vous finalement dire aux anciens fans pour leur donner envie d’acheter à nouveau un album de TERRORIZER ? Et que pourriez-vous dire aux nouveaux fans de grindcore qui n’ont pas connu les années 80 à votre propos et à propos de cet album ?
Pete Sandoval : Il n’y a vraiment aucun gimmick, juste l’opportunité pour les gens de pouvoir se rendre compte de l’évolution de la  musique et des musiciens. C’est vraiment fantastique de voir ce qu’est devenu World Downfall et nous remercions sincèrement les fans qui nous ont suivis à cette époque pour leur support indéfectible. En tant qu’artistes, c’est notre boulot que de créer et de faire partager les expressions de la musique brutale et des concepts des textes. Nous pouvons simplement espérer que dans 20 ans, on se rappellera de Darker Days Ahead comme ayant été aussi un important disque avant-gardiste…

This interview is already cult ! These answers you’ll read were unexpected coz I sent the questions by mail to the band THE day when Jesse Pintado (guitars) passed away in Holland without knowing of course the terrible news !!! Fuckin’ and awful coincidence! That’s the reason why you’ll find here some questions for Jesse without answers… We can perfectly understand that ! The band released a new fantastic album, Darker Days Ahead, more than 15 years after the awesome World Downfall. Thanks to Pete Sandoval and Jesse Pintado for that, and a big thank again to Pete and Anthony (new vocalist) for the answers of this interview. Their attitude is very professional despite the terrible atmosphere! Maximum and eternal respect !!!

Hello ! It’s a pleasure and a honour for me to do this interview for Noiseweb and Metal Observer. Thanks for your time !
First question you certainly answered dozens time, but… Why did you wait so much time to release this second album ?
Due to obligations with our other bands, Morbid Angel and Napalm Death, over the years it had been impossible to set aside time to work on a second Terrorizer release. With Jesse’s departure from Napalm, he was able to focus on this recording.

I’ve already read some things about that, but can you explain to our readers why it’s not Oscar Garcia who sings on this album ? And how do you judge the performance of the new singer ?
Oscar was contacted and asked to reunite.  Due to personal obligations, he declined involvement. The new singer, Anthony Rezhawk, is an old friend who’s vocal work and lyric writing fits Terrorizer well. His performance was as expected, brutal sounding and brutally honest.

David Vincent is not in the band too for this new story. Why ?
The reason being is that I believe he is too busy. When he's not on tour with Morbid Angel, he tours extensively with the Genitorturers. I realized that we needed someone available for touring at any time, we don't want schedule conflicts.

Finally, Tony Norman plays the second guitar and the bass parts (!) on the record. It’s almost surprising I’d say, coz there’s no solo on this record… What were the motives in taking Tony in the band ?
Like I said, we needed someone that is ready to tour, and since Tony Norman has always done a good job with Morbid Angel, I thought he was the right man for the job.

Let’s speak about the music now… For some people, this record is a killing, for others, it doesn’t manage to exceed Wold Downfall. But I have the impression that a lot of people don’t know a lot of the tracks on the CD are older than World Downfall ! Firstly, what can you answer to these criticisms, and secondly, can you tell us more about these tracks you used again ?
We understand that it’s natural to want to compare the two releases, but we hope our fans new and old will appreciate Dark Days Ahead without bias. Anyone who’d hope or expect for this album to be a carbon copy of World Downfall is unrealistic, and anyone who is caught up on whether it’s better or worse only deny themselves the experience of enjoying it as its own entity. This album is a unique artefact, a modern recording of many ancient songs, with new material bridging the gap. We feel it fully embodies the essence of the band and retains the integrity of the name. We hope that people understand also that the band’s intent is not only to create destructive music ; it’s also to destroy false hopes about the nature, history, and future of civilization. For those who appreciate heartfelt commentary on the state of the world, this follow up should provide a lethal dose of terroristic disillusionment.

When did you find some time to create new tracks, and how were the processes of composition and recording ?
As stated above, Jesse’s departure from Napalm allowed the time for new tracks. The process began with Jesse and me recording demo tracks in Florida. It was decided that Anthony Rezhawk would be doing vocals. At that point, his Los Angeles “Seventh Generation Collective” produced a demo. When Century Media picked it up, the band carried out the album recording in Florida at D.O.W. studios.

A question haunts all the old fans : why did you re-record "Dead Shall Rise" ? You needed a track to finish the album (lol…)? Is there some differences between the 2 versions, for you ?
We wanted to re-create the feel of the song circa 1986-1987 while using the advances of technology. We really like that song and wanted to bring it into the modern era.

The final track, "Ghost Train", is very bizarre. You smoked some marijuana before composing it or what ? lol… This track is a trip in space !
He he… Pete is a talented pianist/keyboardist and he wanted to share a bit of his madness with Terrorizer fans.  You can definitely feel a sense of urgency in that track.

We know that the lyrics are often important for a grindcore band…. What are the lyrics about on this record ?
Darker Days Ahead demonstrates modern intensity and lyrical depth. Without relying on fantasmic ideations of hell, it effectively induces paralyzing fear and disturbing torment through the depiction of the horrors of reality. The forces of technologically advanced global environmental destruction, human and animal enslavement, and the concentration of power in the bloody hands of corporate conquistadors all threaten to darken the days ahead.

Could Jesse talk us about his departure from NAPALM DEATH and is it a big deception for him to be out of the band now ? Did he listen to the new albums of the band, and is there a possibility for him to join’em again someday ?
Jesse has passed away. We cannot answer these questions...

How do you judge the grindcore scene nowadays, which evolved a lot since you and the first Napalm Death albums… According to me, this scene is polluted by a lot of followers which sing some really weak things (in France, we have a lot of these idiot bands !). What is your viewpoint on this ?
It has been awesome to see the style grow and be embraced closely all over the world. Overall though, there’s lack a lot of pertinent content. Grindcore has long been the middle ground between punk and metal bringing radical ideas into brutal music. Unfortunately, a lot of grindcore has lost this purpose.

Is TERRORIZER here for a long time, for another album, a world tour ?
Plans are on hold in the wake of Jesse's death a couple of weeks ago. We’ll see…

What could you finally say to the old fans, to give’em the desire to buy again a TERRORIZER album ? And what could you add for the new grindcore fans who didn’t know the 80’s about you and this album ?
There aren’t really any gimmicks, just the opportunity to experience the evolution of the music and the musicians. It’s amazing how far reaching World Downfall has become and we sincerely thank all of the fans in the underground for their dedication. As artists, it’s our job to create and to share expressions of extreme music and lyrical concepts. We could only hope that 20 years from now, Darker Days Ahead will be remembered and felt to be an important harbinger.
