Je doute que beaucoup de monde connaisse Obtest ici. Peux-tu présenter les musiciens et faire un historique rapide du groupe en quelques mots ?
OBTEST vient de Lituanie. Le groupe s’est formé fin 1992 et nous avons enregistré notre première démo à l’été 1994. C’était du raw black metal. En 1995, suivirent 2 démos, "Oldness Comming" et "Pries Audra", la dernière étant distribuée un peu partout dans l’underground mondial. Le pas suivant fut l’album "Tukstantmetis", sorti en 1997 en format K7 en Lituanie. Notre premier EP, "997", est sorti sur un label allemand, German Miriquidi Productions (Hail!) en 1998. En 2000, nous avons participé à une tournée allemande comme support pour Eminenz. Un nouvel EP, “Prisiek" sortit en Allemagne en 2001.
Fin 2001, nous avons signé chez Ledo Takas et enregistré notre second album, "Auka Seniems Dievams". Cet album a été distribué mondialement. En 2002, nous avons tourné avec  Skyforger, Sear Bliss et Grief of Emerald. Nous avons sorti un autre EP en 2003 et fin 2005, notre troisième album est sorti. Intitulé  "Is Kartos I Karta" (From generation to generation), il nous a permis de jouer en Lettonie, Estonie, Belarus, Allemagne, Tchéquie et même au Portugal. En janvier 2007, nous avons même eu la chance d’aller jouer deux concerts aux U.S.A, dont un lors du Heathen Crusade  festival. Finalement, en avril, nous avons enregistré “Gyvybes Medis” en Pologne et avons réussi à signer chez Osmose Productions. Le line-up actuel est composé de Baalberith (vocals/depuis 1992), Insmuth (drums/depuis 1992), Sadlave (guitares, backings/depuis 1992), Demonas (basse/depuis 2002) et Enrikas (guitares/depuis 2005).

Vous n’êtes certes pas très connus en France mais vous existez donc depuis 1992. Tu peux nous donner tes impressions sur les tournées auxquelles vous avez participé ?
En 2000, Miriquidi Productions nous a préparé une tournée avec le groupe allemand Eminenz (death/black metal). C’est la raison pour laquelle nous avons pris un bassiste et nous avons beaucoup répété pour être au point. Quand notre deuxième album est sorti, nous avons tourné aussi avec Skyforger, Sear Bliss et Grief of Emerald. Les concerts les plus importants auxquels nous avons participé ont en effet été les dates aux USA, avec des groupes assez connus. Nous avons été très impressionnés de jouer devant tant de monde. Nous avons marqué les esprits, d’autant que les gens là-bas ne sont pas habitués à voir des groupes provenant des pays baltes ! Mais notre plus gros concert fut celui que nous avons donné en Tchéquie, lors du Brutal Assault open air festival, qui nous a vraiment bien bottés !

Nous n’avons pas d’informations sur la scène de votre pays. Comment ça se passe chez vous, niveau concerts, studios, magazines, etc…. ? Comment est perçue la scène Metal ?
La scène Metal n’est pas très grande ici puisque nous n’avons que 3 millions d’habitants. Le Metal est très underground ici et manque de musiciens ambitieux. Nous avons quelques groupes actifs ici mais tout ça reste très local. Tout est décalé ici en fait : des groupes qui ont marché ailleurs il y a 5 ou 10 ans sont au top actuellement en Lituanie ! Je recommande quand même des groupes comme Luctus, Andaja, Zalvarinis (folk rock) ou encore Soul Stealer. Malgré tout, nous avons pas mal de concerts ici et certains groupes connus ont fait l’effort de venir jouer chez nous. Nous sommes à 700 km de la Finlande donc nous n’avons pas de fortes relations avec eux et de Russie, nous sommes abreuvés de trucs pop merdiques puisque malheureusement, notre gros voisin n’a jamais eu de scène Metal significative. 


Comment définiriez-vous votre style ?
Du Pagan Metal. Pagan au niveau de la philosophie et de cette sublime touche de folklore héritée de notre musique lituanienne ; Metal au niveau de la performance musicale.

Comment avez-vous réussi à décrocher ce deal avec Osmose Productions ?
En fait, nous avons reçu une proposition, ce qui nous a beaucoup surpris, parce que nous étions prêts à sortir notre quatrième album chez Ledo Takas Records. La décision a été rapide et quelques mois après, notre album sortait chez Osmose. Il y a 15 ans de cela, nous rêvions déjà d’un contrat avec ce label, nous lui avions même envoyé notre première démo il y a 11 ans !

J’ai vu que vous êtes restés chez votre label historique, Ledo Takas, pour la sortie et la distribution du nouvel album dans les Pays Baltes. En quoi était-ce important ?
Parce que ça fait longtemps que nous sommes ensemble et c’est mieux pour nous de continuer avec des gens qui connaissent très bien les spécificités du marché local. Personne ne pouvait mieux remplir cette mission qu’eux ici. 

Quels sont les retours pour le moment ?
Les réactions sont réellement bonnes, nous apprécions. Tout le monde nous demande quand nous allons venir défendre nos titres sur scène ; il me semble donc qu’il y ait une vraie attente par rapport à cet album.

En quoi était-ce important pour vous d’avoir des textes en lituanien ?
C’est important parce que nous sommes lituaniens et que nous voulons faire partager la beauté de notre langue aux autres, à l’instar de ce que font des groupes comme Slyforger, Loits, Die Apokalyptischen Reiter ou encore Enslaved.

Quelle est la philosophie d’Obtest ? J’ai vu sur votre site que tous vos textes avaient été traduits du lituanien à l’anglais… Avez-vous donc un message particulier à faire passer ?
Les traductions n’ont rien à voir avec notre philosophie. C’est juste que notre audience n’est pas que lituanienne. Les gens qui s’intéressent à nos textes peuvent donc avoir la possibilité de chanter avec nous tout en comprenant ce que nous racontons, donc le truc le plus simple était de tout traduire en anglais. Si vous trouvez un quelconque message, tant mieux pour vous mais tout ça n’est que de la poésie. Notre philosophie est de faire appel à l’esprit de nos ancêtres et de les remercier pour ce que nous possédons aujourd’hui.

Comment se passe la composition chez vous ? Quelle était l’idée directrice cette fois-ci ?
Quand j’ai trouvé le titre de l’album, je savais de quoi j’allais parler. J’ai donc passé un peu de temps à réunir du matériel déjà composé avec le nouveau, autour de ce titre d’album. La mélodie est très importante pour moi parce que je n’aime pas ces riffs mécaniques qui ne servent qu’à headbanguer dans la plupart des cas. Mais les mélodies seules ne font pas un bon morceau, il faut réussir à les inclure dans un ensemble qui va fonctionner de lui-même, ce qui donne une chanson, quoi. Ensuite, il faut s’en approprier l’esprit et la répéter jusqu’à ce que ce soit parfait.


Quels seraient les titres les plus emblématiques d’Obtest, selon toi, sur ce nouvel album, si tu devais en choisir 3 ? Et pourquoi ?
Pas évident comme question mais je dirais :
-    Le premier titre, “Apeigos” (Rites). C’est un titre qui parle du sens qu’on peut donner à un rituel ou à une expérience pendant son action. Nous pouvons nier tout un tas de moments spirituels dans notre vie, mais en réalité c’est qu’ils prennent différentes formes.
-    Le titre “Gyvybes Medis” (Arbre de Vie) est l’axe de cet album, aussi bien musicalement qu’au niveau des lyrics. Des mots courts et précis, présentant le modèle du monde du peuple Baltique antique. Musicalement, ça évoque la sensation qu’on a de rentrer à la maison après de longues années d'errance pour faire l'examen de tout ce qui s’est passé dans ta vie.
-    L’outro instrumentale, “Ikaitai”, donné dans le sens de “otages”. Quoique tu puisses avoir l’impression d’être complètement libre, il y a toujours un sentiment que quelque chose va arriver, contre lequel tu ne pourras rien faire.  Tu peux donc être l’otage du temps, d’un endroit, de circonstances – malgré tout, il faut que tu avances !

En écoutant votre dernier album, je me suis rendu compte que votre musique laissait apparaître pas mal d’influences purement heavy-metal, notamment au niveau des soli de guitare. Quelles sont vos influences ?
Les soli heavy-metal old school sont une sorte de nouveau sang dans nos titres, depuis que nous avons avec nous le second guitariste, Enrikas. Il est à fond dans le heavy-metal, il a son propre groupe, Soul Stealer, donc, c’est sa contribution.

Pourquoi avez-vous fait le choix de n’utiliser que les instruments traditionnels du Metal (guitare-basse-batterie) alors que certains côtés folk de votre musique auraient pu nécessiter d’autres sons ?
Parce que c’est notre manière de faire, créer des atmosphères avec simplement les instruments classiques du rock, dont les possibilités, en cherchant bien, sont infinies.

Votre album est sorti dans un format classique mais vous proposez un CD Digibook luxueux, dans une édition limitée. C’est vous qui en avez eu l’idée ou c’est Osmose ? Tu peux nous détailler le contenu ?
L’idée du digibook vient de Ledo Takas et sortira via le label lituanien, distribué par Osmose Prod. Nous avons décidé de continuer la tradition de proposer des choses inédites pour nos sorties. Le premier CD-book est sorti il y a trois ans avec notre 3ème album, Is Kartos I Karta. Les deux albums sont donc disponibles dans une forme conventionnelle et en digibook. Il contient toutes les paroles, les traductions, des photos exclusives du groupe, des discussions à propos de la sortie de Gyvybes Medis. Le livre a l’aspect d’un vrai livre et contient une histoire spéciale (écrite en lituanien, désolé) qui enrichit les paroles.

I’m not sure that a lot of people here in France know very well Obtest. Can you introduce the musicians and do a short history of the band ?
- OBTEST comes from Lithuania, the land of thousand mounds. The band was formed in the end of 1992. The first rehearsal tape was recorded in summer of 1994. It was raw and furious black metal tunes. In 1995 we recorded two demo tapes "Oldness Comming" and "Pries Audra".  The last one was distributed well onto underground world all around the planet. The next step was "Tukstantmetis" album, which was released on April 23rd of 1997 as a tape-album. The MC album was released in Lithuania and distributed locally. The first 7"EP "997" was put out by German Miriquidi Productions (Hail!) in 1998. After the realization of EP Miriquidi agreed to put out CD version of "Tukstantmetis" album, so it was distributed worldwide from 1999. In the year 2000 OBTEST played a tour in Germany as a support band for Eminenz. One more 7" EP "Prisiek" was released in Germany in 2001. In the end of the year OBTEST signed to Ledo Takas and recorded second full-length album "Auka Seniems Dievams". The album was released as LP/CD and distributed worldwide. In autumn of 2002 OBTEST toured in Europe with Skyforger, Sear Bliss, Grief of Emerald. In 2003 "Dvylika JuodVarniu" 7"EP was put out by Ledo Takas Records, in memory of Lord Ominous (Anubi). In the fall of 2005 the third album "Is Kartos I Karta" (From generation to generation) was released. The promotional concerts began in winter, OBTEST played in Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Germany, Czech, Ireland, Portugal. In January of 2007 two gigs happened in U.S., one of them in the “Heathen Crusade” festival. The latest, fourth album “Gyvybes Medis” was recorded in April of 2007 in Poland. Due to the mixing and mastering works and negotiations between record labels and the band, this album realization date moved to April of this year, 2008. The current line up would be: Baalberith (vocals/since 1992), Insmuth (drums/since 1992), Sadlave (guitar, backings/since 1992), Demonas (bass/since 2002), Enrikas (guitar/since 2005).

We don’t really know you here but you formed the band in 1992. I saw that you played on some european tours yet and you even played in the USA  ! Can you tell us how it was possible and how were the reactions of the metalheads ?
- Back in 2000, Miriquidi Productions worked or us th first tour in Germany. OBTEST made support for EMINENZ, the German death/black metal band. That was the reason for us to invite the fourth member, a bass player. After that we started to rehearse more and more, and played live concerts around. When our second album "Auka Seniems Dievams" was released by Ledo Takas Records, we joined one more tour in the fall of 2002 with SKYFORGER, SEAR BLISS, GRIEF OF EMERALD. The third tour (in winter 2006) was held to introduce our "Is Kartos i Karta" album, then we made couple of concerts in Germany, Czechia and Ireland. Later same year we played festivals in Belarus and Portugal. The most remote concerts we have played so far were in the U.S. We made a gig at Heathen Crusade festival, and another live show in Mission, for native Lacota people. The U.S. concerts were a big impression for us as well as for the audience. The bands that played in the “Heathen Crusade II” festival were known to us, and it was an honour to share the stage with all of them! American audience lacks artists from Europe, especially from the ancient Europe, because all in all most of them have the European roots, and they notice that and remember. Our biggest appearance was last year in Czech's Brutal Assault open air festival, which made a very big impression on us.

We don’t have any informations on the Metal scene of your country. How is it in Lituania, for concerts, studios, magazines, etc… ? How is the Metal scene ? I think being very close to Russia and Finland is a good thing for you, isn’t it ?
- Metal scene in Lithuania is not so big, we have only 3 million of people here, and metal bangers are the minority. Metal music is simply underground here. Tradition of rock and heavy music in general is very silly, and the scene lacks ambitious musicians. We have a couple of metal bands active, but most of them are just local bands. Almost everything is delayed here, when some genre is on the top in Europe, then after 5-10 years it’s on the top in Lithuania. Bands I could recommend are LUCTUS, ANDAJA, ZALVARINIS (folk rock), SOUL STEALER. Anyway, we have lot of concerts here, couple of recent famous bands are touring around, not avoiding our venues. We are not so close to Finland (700 km) so we have not so strong relations, and from Russia we have only pop-shit, unfortunately this big neighbour never had a good metal scene or any significant metal band. 

How could you describe your style, and what gives you the desire to play such a music ?
- Pagan metal. Pagan – in the sense of philosophy, and sublime touch of folklore heritage in music. Metal – in the sense of musical performance.

How did you obtain the deal with Osmose Productions, and why this label ?
- We got a proposal, and that was surprising, because we were ready to release our fourth album on Ledo Takas Records. The decision was made swiftly, and after a few months album was released under the sign of French Osmose Productions. Some 15 years ago we were just dreaming about the contract with this company, even though the demo tape of our first album was sent to Osmose 11 years ago.

I’ve read that you stayed with your historic label, Ledo Takas, for the release and the distribution of your new label in the Baltic States. Why ?
- Because we’ve gone a long way together, and it’s better to have someone near who handles all the works around. He (chief of Ledo Takas Records) knows everything about the local metal scene and no one will handle it better than him.

How are the reactions so far for the new record, by fans and press ?
- Reactions are really good, we appreciate them all. Everyone is asking when we start to raid over the lands with the live shows. It seems we have real attention these days.

Why is it so important to have lituanian lyrics for you ?
- Yes, it’s important for us, because we are Lithuanian, and we want to share all the beauty of our tongue with others. It’s so nice to hear bands singing in their native language: SKYFORGER, LOITS, DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER, ENSLAVED, MASTER’S HAMMER and so on.

What is the philosophy of Obtest ? I saw on your site that all your songs had been translated in English. So, do you want to deliver a special message in your lyrics ?
- The translations have nothing to do with the philosophy of OBTEST. If our audience would be only Lithuanians, we wouldn’t translate anything, right? People who are interested in our works should have the opportunity to dig into what we are singing about, so the best way is to translate it into “international” English language. If you find any message here for yourself,  you are lucky, but I don’t think it’s special or something - it’s poetry. The philosophy of OBTEST is to pass forth the spirit of our forefathers in the shape we could handle and possess these days.

How is the composition in Obtest ? What was the main idea when you start to compose the new album ? It seems that power and melodies are very important for you…
- When the title song was completed, I understood what the entire album will be about. Then I spent a couple of times to bound all the older material and the new one around this title opus. Melody is very important for me, as I don’t like all that banging and mechanical riffing in metal music, in most cases. And even melodies alone are not so good, as they are bound together with the other parts into one organic flow, what completes the song. Then it takes some shape, some spirit and could be performed perfectly.

I know it’s a difficult question, but if you had to choose 3 tracks of the new album, the most representative ones, which ones will you choose ? And why ?
- The opener “Apeigos” is a song about the sense of a ritual and experience during its action. We could deny lots of spiritual moments in our life, but actually it has just different shape these days. The title “Gyvybes medis” is an “axis mundi” for this album, both musically and lyrically. The short and accurate words, presenting the model of the world of the ancient Baltic people. Musically it’s like a returning home after long years of wandering and looking through your whole passed life. Instrumental outro “Ikaitai” hides inside the sense of its name - hostages. How free you are, there is always a feeling, that something’s going wrong, and you can’t do anything about it. You could be hostage of time, of place, of circumstances, and anyway - you have to go on!

By listening to your last album, I realized that your music let seem quite a lot of purely heavy-metal influences, notably with the guitar solos. What are your influences ?
- The old school heavy metal solos are the new drop of fresh blood in our songs, since we have a second guitar player in our crew – Enrikas. He is into heavy metal, and runs his own band SOUL STEALER, so it’s his contribution.

Why did you choose to use only the traditional instruments of Metal (guitars-bass-drums) while certain folk sides of your music would have been able to maybe require other sounds ?
- Because it’s our way, to create special mood with this classic rock instrumentation, which definitely is inexhaustible.

Your album is released in a classic format but you propose a luxurious CD Digibook, in a limited edition. Is it you who had the idea or is it Osmose ? Can you detail us the contents?
- The idea of the Book is from Ledo Takas, and it is released via this Lithuanian label, and distributed by Osmose Productions. We decided to continue the tradition of unusual shapes for our releases. The first CD Book was released 3 years ago of our third album “Is Kartos I Karta”. Both releases have valuable and aesthetic form. It contains all the lyrics, translations and exclusive pictures of the band, talking about the release  of “Gyvybes Medis”. The Book has a shape of a real book and has a special story (written in Lithuanian, unfortunately) enriching the lyrics.
